COVID-19 pandemic is a wake-up call. It is crystal clear that we need to do things differently. We are being called to join in as subjects belonging to the Earth community. The pandemic has opened a portal through which humans can return home. This will result in deep and authentic relationships with other beings. Opportunities like these are rare. A clear vision is needed to allow humans to see another world. This is a world not blemished by greed, exploitation, manipulation, abuse and selfishness. An exploration into Gaia solutions is now needed more than ever.
However, responses to global pandemics including COVID-19 have been framed within the capitalistic system and mind frame. This response only treats symptoms of a disease. Sadly, once the symptoms are suppressed, humans have a tendency of returning to conducting business as usual. This is all but absurd.
Some of the global responses to COVID-19 have been centred on cushioning economies so that profiteering businesses stay viable. But, saving these businesses means we are saying yes to a destructive system during and post COVID-19.
Meanwhile, major ‘philanthropists’ are digging dip into their pockets to finance research for a COVID-19 vaccine. This has given false hope to millions of people. The public and private owned media have moved swiftly to popularize the gravity of COVID-19. They have raised hope of a miracle vaccine. If found, many governments will spend public funds to buy the highly priced vaccine to ‘save’ their nations. But a vaccine only treats symptoms, poisons the body and makes pharmaceutical companies and their investors richer. All this points to corporate rule in a capitalistic system.
Another response to COVID-19 has been the imposition of lock-downs aimed at slowing the spread of COVID-19. These lock-downs are taking different forms. There are partial lock-downs which work like curfew during the colonial era and full lock-downs resembling house arrests. One way or another, lock-downs have led to the gross violation of human rights. Lock-downs have also exposed the fragility of the system governing our society.
Humans are not meant to be confined indoors. They need to have a deep connection with nature. In nature they will be touched by the wind, the sun and the rain. It is in nature where humans feel whole. They learn how things work and find solutions to the problems we face. The lessons come from the laws that govern nature. Humans need to learn these laws in order to survive.
